Exchange life in Perth

Aika monta viikonloppua tuli vietettyä ihan jossain muualla kuin Perthissä, joten blogissanikin Perth on jäänyt vähän vähemmälle huomiolle. Tässä nyt sitten suurempien tarinoiden puuttuessa ihan arkielämää Perthissä ja UWAssa.

After spending so many weekends out of the city and not telling much about Perth  here is some everyday life in Perth and UWA.

Kampuksella kun asun niin suurin osa ajasta kuluu niin ikään kampuksella - tutoriaaleihin reissatessa (kouluhommia muuten riittää täällä, mutta niistä myöhemmin), koulun salilla urheillessa ja kavereitten kanssa ruokalassa (vuokraan sisältyy 2 kouluateriaa per päivä) tai yhteistiloissa hengatesssa. Kampuksen maisemat ovat kuitenkin edelleen nättejä (täällä on vähän erinäköistä kuin Otaniemessä) palmuineen, riikinkukkoineen ja papukaijoineen, ja aurinko paistaa aina matkalla niin mieli pysyy korkealla vaikka kouluhommat pukkaavatkin päälle. Lähestyvästä talvesta huolimatta päivisin täällä on edelleen t-paita kelit (noin +25 astetta yleensä), ainoastaan aamut ovat nyt  huhtikuun aikana huomattavasti viilenneet (+13 astetta hrrrrr). Mutta aurinko tosiaan paistaa pilvettömältä taivaalta, ainokaisen sateeni koko kuukauden parin oleskeluni aikana täällä länsirannikolla koin reissatessani Sydneyyn Itärannikolle :)

Living at the campus I also spend  lot of time at the campus - going to the tutorials (and trust me, there's lot of studying in here), going to the gym and hanging out in the common areas or in the diner with friends. However with all the palm trees, ponds, peacocks and parrotts the surroundings are much prettier here than at my uni's comparable campus in Finland (meaning Otaniemi), and in addition the sun is shining all the time. Despite the upcoming winter days are still warm (+25 degrees, only the mornings now in April are actually getting cold with only +13 degrees hrrr) and the only rain I have seen during my whole one-almost-two-months-stay at the West coast was in Sydney in the East.

This is the closest I can get to Insta’s food photos with Unihall’s kitchen facilities :D In addition to two school meals a day included in my rent I try to cook these banana-chia-egg pancakes in order to maintain some healthy lifestyle. I like them and they are easy enough to make even with our common kitchen. However, if you are a big friend of fine dining and good, healthy food, Unihall (or colleges in general I guess) are not exactly the best places for that…

Aina välillä tai useamminkin kampuksella tapahtuu, nimittäin UWAn klubien järkkäämiä tapahtumia urheilusta leffa-iltoihin ja suuriin opiskelijapippaloihin. Ihan yhtä aktiivista ja erikoista opiskleijakulttuuria kuin KY:llä täällä ei mielestäni ole (tosin sekin vaikuttaa, että vaihtarina en nyt ihan kaikkea varmaankaan näe), mutta lähelle päästään ja hauskaa on ollut :)

Every once in while or quite often to be exact there are different things going on at the campus meaning all the happenings organized by the student clubs of UWA. We have sport events, activities, movie nights and student parties and much more here. Maybe the student culture isn't quite as special and active as the one with "KY" (my home business school's student guild back in Aalto uni in Finland) but we have had great stuff here nevertheless. Fun times! :)

EMAS (Electronic Music Appreciation Society of UWA) Miami Vice Party

Keskustaan pääsee kampukselta bussilla (vajaa 10min Swan Riverin rantaa pitkin, lähempänä kuin Otaniemi Helsinkiä, ja opiskelijalippu SmartRider kortilla kustantaa noin yhden dollarin), missä tulee käytyä silloin tällöin ulkona viikonloppuisin, shoppaamassa (esim naamavärejä opiskelijajuhliin tai farkut nyt kun täällä yhtäkkiä viileni) sekä muualla asuvia kavereita moikkaamassa kahvilla. Perthin keskusta on mukava - okei, Perth ei omaa sellaista "wau!" Sydneyn hektistä suurkaupunki-metropolifiilistä, mutta kaikki on kävelyetäisyydellä, mielettömän siistiä ja täältä löytyy mm rantabulevardi kävely- ja pyöräilyreitteineen, hienoja kauppoja, piilokahviloita, Northbridge täynnä erilaisia baareja, Kings Park lenkkeilyä ja picnicejä varten yms. Myös Fremantle on kiva paikka käydä ulkona, pienempi lähikaupunki meren rannalla, ja lähistöltä (n 20min bussimatka kampukselta) löytyy pitkät hiekkarannat, sekä vähän etäämpänä Lancelin hiekkadyynit ja Swan Valley viinitarhat yms.

It takes about ten minutes to go to the city center of Perth by bus (costs about 1AUD with student discount and SmartRider), where we go every now and then to go out on weekends, to go shopping, to go for a coffee or to meet our friends living out of campus. The center is nice - okay, it doesn't have that hectic, "wau", big city feeling of Sydney, but it's pretty and super clean and everything is at walkable distance. There's a boulevard along the river with walking and cycling tracks, cool stores and malls, hidden cafés, Northbridge full of bars, Kings Park that is great for jogging and for picnic and so on. Fremantle is another cool place to visit and go out, a smaller city nearby by the sea, and it's not too far awat and neither are the beaches (20minutes or so).

Perthiin parhaimmistoon kuuluu rannat :) Cottesloe on edelleen lempparipaikkojani ja yhtiä parhaimpia rantoja koko Australiassa pitkän pitkän rantaviivan, hyvien aaltojen, valkoisen hiekan ja kristallinkirkkaan turkoosin meren ansiosta (eikä täällä ole meduusoja hah). Cottesloella on tullut vietettyä aika monta päivää ja muutamat auringonlaskut, ainakin maaliskuun loppuun asti oli kuumia (+30 - +39 asteisia) rantapäiviä pitkin poikin. Ja lähellä olevan Cottesloen lisäksi muualla länsirannikko on täynnä vielä mielettömämpiä rantoja. Study breakin Up North roadtrippiä odotellessa <3

The best part of Perth are the beaches :) Cottesloe still remains as one of my favourite places here and it's seriously one of the best beaches in whole Australia thanks to its long long coastline, good waves, white sand and crystal-clear turquoise sea (and no jellyfish as mentioned before). I have spent many days there and few sunsets as well, we had hot beach days all the way until the end of March (remains to be seen if there are some hot days still to come). And in addition to nearby Cottesloe and Scarborough the west coast is full of even more incredible beaches that you can reach by roadtripping up and down the coast. Looking forward to our study break trip!
